In this new volume of watercolours David Gentleman goes beyond the European subjects of his previous bestselling books. His travels in India have taken him across the length and breadth of the country to explore and draw its landscapes, architecture and people. He thus joins the long tradition of English artists who have gone to India and been struck by the strangeness and intensity of the experience, and by the sheer variety of a country where an hour's flight can take one to the extremes of climate or even into the way of life of another century. His distinctive and alluring pen-and-wash drawings record the architectural remains of India's successive waves of powerful and now-vanished invaders, including most recently the legacy of the British Raj,surviving grandly in Victorian Bombay and Lutyen's New Delhi, and more picturesquely in the wooden verandahs and red tin roofs of the hill stations. As well as the great architectural set- pieces, David Gentleman records the timeless realities of Indian daily life with the compassion and informed reactions for which he is renowned: the beautiful bullock cats, the noisy yellow auto- rickshaws, the pitiless existence on the pavements, the sacred cows taking their chance on the motorways among the brightly painted lorries, the vivid colours of the population and the entire turmoil of the new India. 'David Gentleman's India' has all the splendour and variety associated with this vast country, but his book is not a nostalgic excercise; it is a profound exploration of an India in part traditional and unchanging, and in part renewed by boundless ingenuity of its diverse population. In this book the magic of David Gentleman's art matches the irrepressible energy, grace and elegance of the people and the country he portrays. David Gentleman, born London in 1930,he was educated at Hertford Grammar School. Studied at St. Albans School of Art (1947-48) and the Royal College of Art,London (1950-53),where he later taught (1953-55).Since then,he has worked freelance from his studio in Camden Town,London, making drawings, watercolours and lithographs of landscapes and buildings, and designing murals, posters, bookjackets, postage stamps, and a wide variety of other design and illustration commissions. His book illustrations have included limited editions of a number of classic works as well as books by several contemporary writers, some of them for children. He has written and illustrated several children's books and one on design,as well as a book of watercolour drawings of contemporary Britain. Many of his illustrations have been engraved on wood and some lithographed; more often, however,he draws in pen and ink with watercolour. As an illustrator,he uses pen and ink, wood engraving, and watercolour. His work is always immaculately presented; his wood engravings reveal a master of pastiche; convincingly and often humorously adopting the style and icongraphy of his subject's period. His work includes murals for the London Underground at Charing Cross station, illustrations and lithographs for English and American publishers and watercolours of France, Italy,Africa and the Pacific and many parts of the British Isles. He first visited India in 1967 to illustrate Kipling's 'The Jungle Book' and he has spent much of the past two years (then 1994) travelling throughout India to make drawings for this book.Elected RDI (1970); member AGI. His previous books are 'David Gentleman's Britain' (1982),'David Gentleman's London' (1985),'David Gentleman's Coastline' (1988) and 'David Gentleman's Paris' (1991) - see my book ID rja821618 for a UK,Qrto HB+dw/dj,SIGNED,1st edn example.
